Frequently Asked Questions
1. Q: What is the Forest Stewardship Council?
A:”The FSC is a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way." (Quote from the FSC site.)
2. Q: What is AMP?
A: AMP refers to Vermont's Acceptable Management Practices Program and, specifically, Acceptable Management Practices for Maintaining Water Quality on Logging Jobs in Vermont. "The AMP's are intended and designed to prevent any mud, petroleum products and woody debris (logging slash) from entering waters of the state. They are scientifically proven methods for loggers and landowners to follow for maintaining water quality and minimizing erosion." The AMP's are enforced by the Agency of Natural Resource Enforcement Division which investigates complaints, monitors logging sites, and provides technical assistance and training.
3. Q: What is a "green" business?
A: " Green" business, according to a report published by The Greater Burlington Industrial Corp. and quoted in the Burlington Free Press (Thurs. April 3, 2008,) refers to companies and organizations that create products and services that "protect or enhance the world's natural systems and encourage new sources of clean energy, or those which directly or indirectly reduce negative impacts on the economy."
4. Q: Why buy environmentally friendly products?
A: Buying environmentally friendly products 1) is good for you and your family because you are no longer putting harmful plastics (which gas off toxic phthalates) or chemicals in your home, and, you can feel good about doing a small thing to make the world healthier 2) is good for the community because the environment is not being degraded to make the product or dispose of the product, and, you are more likely to be supporting the local economy.
5. Q: Why is the BED-A-BRUSH toothbrush holder so much better than any other toothbrush holder?
A: The BED-A-BRUSH is far more sanitary than most toothbrush holders; there is no place for bacteria and viruses to grow. The BED-A-BRUSH is made from nontoxic materials and finishes. Each BED-A-BRUSH is a uniquely beautiful piece of wood.
6. Q: I have a large family; how can we use the BED-A-BRUSH?
A: A large family may need two or more BED-A-BRUSH's! If you have more than one bathroom, put one in each. If you have one bathroom, hang a BED-A-BRUSH on the wall.
7. Q: I own a Bed and Breakfast and/or Hotel; can I purchase the BED-A-BRUSH and/or Companion Soap Dish for my suites?
A: Absolutely! In addition, you may want to customize the top of the base of the BED-A-BRUSH by placing your own logo on it and using it as a classy give away or memento for you valued customers to take with them as a remembrance of their stay with you. Contact us and we will discuss details.
8. Q: Why did ECO1NEST develop a bag dryer?
A: Although plastic bags in general are not sustainable, at the least, for starters, we wanted to give people a way of minimizing their use of plastic produce bags. The BED-A-BAG handy bag dryers make it easy to wash and re-use plastic produce bags. It's much easier than draping them over the dishes in the dish rack!
Also, you can use the BED-A-BAG to dry compostable (biodegradable) produce bags or cotton produce bags which can be used again and again for years. Look on our links page and there are several links for cotton produce bags (reusablebags.com; organicbaglady.com are two of them.)
We developed the BED-A-BAG because it is useful and also because we want to raise awareness of the problems with plastic bags. The main problems are:
...plastic is made from nonrenewable resource (petroleum)
...plastic is non-biodegradable
...plastic bags create litter which blows around, fills land fills, creates huge
clean-up costs
...plastic is mistaken for food by land and sea animals (many animals die from
eating or getting tangled in plastic
...most plastic is somewhat or very toxic, especially if heated
...even "biodegradable plastic bags" may not be a perfect solution because
factory farming of soy and corn often destroys or pollutes the environment
(destruction of rain forests, use of toxic fertilizers/pesticides, genetic
modification of seeds)
9.) Q: Why are there links about water on the ECO1NEST web site?
A: It is said that water is life. Good water is certainly essential to health. More and more water is becoming a commodity and a scarce commodity at that - in other words, there are critical water shortages in much of the world, including the United States, and corporations are attempting to own and sell water, rather than it being a birthright. Moreover, most, if not all, of our municipal water is contaminated by industrial pollutants and drugs. Further, many municipalities add fluoride to the water for the misguided reason of improving dental health (see Fluoride Action Network web site for more information about the toxicity of fluoride compounds and the health impacts of current fluoride exposure.)
10. Q: Why are there links about nutrition on ECO1NEST's web site?
A: Good dental health starts with good nutrition. With most Americans eating food that is produced in food product factories rather than local farms and from scratch in our own kitchens, the general level of nutrition is appallingly poor even in people who consider themselves to have a "good" standard of living. Food factories, huge agribusinesses that produce everything from corn, to beef, to crackers generally have totally unsustainable farming and manufacturing practices resulting in soil depletion and soil loss, pollution of the waterways and soil, toxic chemicals, hormones, and bacteria in the meats and foods, a low level of actual nutrition in the food, and bad health for the workers who are exposed to the toxins and the dangers of working in these facilities.
